The Word and Living Bread

Welcome to your online Sunday worship from St. George’s, Georgetown for Sunday, August 8, 2021.

As we begin to prepare for a return to being able to offer in-person worship in September, I have decided to take three Sundays to help us look at and reflect on what we do and say in our usual service. This Sunday is the second of three. If you don’t have a copy of the BAS at home, here is the link to a digital copy of our service book, the Book of Alternative Services.

Family Ministry

Our family ministry resources this week focus on the reading from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, chapter 4, verse 25 to chapter 5 verse 2 which encourages us to be imitators of God in Christ in our daily lives. In our weekly Sunday email, there are links to helpful family pages that help explain the reading and a fun comic page about the lesson that can be coloured.

Please sign up for our weekly emails to get those links to these great resources to use together with your family.

Opening Music

This Sunday, for an opening hymn to sing, I suggest “O Worship The King.”

The Gospel Reading (John 6:35,41-51)

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” They were saying, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” Jesus answered them, “Do not complain among yourselves. No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day. It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”1

Prayers of the People

We pray for all medical staff, all essential frontline workers and their families, for those living and working at Long Term Care and seniors residences, and for those that are helping to distribute the vaccine: that God will be their strength and support.  Let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

We pray for all those unfairly discriminated against in our society, praying especially for justice and reconciliation for our continent’s indigenous people.  Let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

We pray for all who are facing trials and difficulties and for those who are sick. Show them your kindness, mercy, and healing.  Let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

(To find the list of those we are praying for in our parish please sign up for our Parish email. To add a name to our prayers please contact me.)

Closing Music

For a traditional closing hymn this week, I recommend “To God Be The Glory.”

For our contemporary song, my recommendation this week is “How Great is Our God.”

As always, I wish you all a blessed and safe Sunday and week.

Thank you for your continued support of the ministry and mission of St. George’s.

Be Well and God Bless.

Peace,

The Rev’d Canon Rob Park
