Light Shining In The Darkness

by The Rev’d Nancy Rowe.

One of the big themes in the BIble is light shining in the darkness.

In the beginning was total and absolute darkness. And God said, “Let there be light!” and so there was light in the darkness and God saw that it was good. But some people chose darkness over the light. God sent prophets to shine light into that darkness, but still some people choose darkness. When the time was right God sent Jesus and the people that walked in darkness have seen a great light. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has never put it out. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” Jesus said we are like light for the whole world. We are to shine like stars among the people.

choose light over darkness

We are called to choose light over darkness. When we choose light, it is reflected in our thoughts, our words, our actions. When we choose the light for our thoughts it shines into the darkness that we all carry within us. When our words are empowered by light those around us are comforted, strengthened and hear the love of God. Healing occurs in the brokenness. When our actions are empowered by light, lives are restored, injustice is threatened and those around us see and feel God’s love. Healing occurs in the brokenness.

Choosing light is not always easy. Standing firm for justice can draw ridicule and scorn. Temptation surrounds us, and being imperfect, we can make mistakes. With God’s help we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and turn once again to light. Only by choosing light can we realize who we truly are. Only by choosing light can we be a light for others.
