For Your Family – March 2012

By The Rev’d Nancy Rowe

Hi Church School Families,
It was so wonderful to see so many of you at the Pancake Supper. That is always such great fun. Who doesn’t like pancakes and syrup! Following the Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Supper day) is the season of Lent. Lent is the forty days before Easter which is a time for reflection on our spiritual journey. It is a time to pause and consider the things that are temptations in our life. Temptation is part of being human and is not a sin. Giving in to temptation is where we get into trouble! Sin, in its simplest terms, is anything that diminishes our relationship with God and with each other.
On Thursday, March 8th, Dan Cranley, St. George’s theology intern, will be leading a book study entitled “Food and Faith: A Theology of Eating”. This study will continue for 4 weeks, on Thursday evenings in the lounge starting at 7:00. The cost of the book is $20.00. If you would like to be a part of the discussion, please contact St. George’s (905-877-8044) to order a book, or speak to Dan.
Jenn Kuhnule is organizing Toddler Time which happens at the same time (Friday from 10:30-12:30) as Baby Talk. Toddler Time is a chance for parents/grandparents to enjoy conversation and coffee while the little ones enjoy playing in the open space of the Church hall. To start there will be a sand ‘box’ and balls available, with the hope that there will be donations of other active toys as time goes on. Toddler Time is for children who are toddling to kindergarten age. We are looking for people who would be interested in volunteering to be the ‘friendly face’ of St. George’s by putting on the coffee and greeting people as they arrive. If you are interested in volunteering, there is a sign up sheet at the Church or just e-mail me (nrowe@stgeorgesgeorgetown.com) and I will add you to the list. The first Toddler Time will be Friday, March 16.
In Church School this month, March 11 and 18 there is no Church School due to March Break. On March 25 Jochebed, Leah and Lot’s wife will be featured and on April 1 another Fruit of the Spirit will be explored.
This month’s Messy Church is being led by Dan Cranley. It promises to be an interesting Messy Church as his topic centers around Graffiti and God’s gift of Jesus. If you want to have a hand at graffiti, this is your chance! Supper is a potato, carrot, sausage casserole. I am looking forward to hearing Dan’s talk at Messy Church. Messy Church is March 14. Doors open at 5:00.
The Spirited Study at the Shepherd’s Crook this month (8:00 on March 21) is a continuation of our discussion of the book, “The Shack”. If you have not read it, not to worry, it does not seem to hinder people’s ability to enter into the conversation.
We are in the planning stages for our Kid’s Camp (aka Vacation BIble School) from July 9-13 and theme is “Operation Overboard – Dare to go deep with God”. It is a great program, full of fun and an opportunity to learn about God. The spaces fill up fast, so if you are interested, please contact the office for a registration form. Kid’s Camp is a half day camp (9:00 to 12:00) and is for kids 4-10 years old.
Hope to see you at Messy Church, on Sunday morning or just out and about.
Blessings,
Nancy
