Family Ministry – Feb. 2012

Greetings St. George’s families,
I hope this finds you all well, albeit weary of winter. I have to admit that I was hoping for some snow as we have planned to go tobogganing at our last PD day Kid’s Camp. If you have children between the ages of 4 and 10 and would like to register then for the next PD day Kid’s Camp you can download the registration form here. The next PD day Kid’s Camps are April 27 and June 8. The camp runs from 9:00 to 3:30 and the cost is $15.00 for the day. It includes crafts, games storytelling, snacks and lunch. It is a fun day.
This month at St. George’s is Vestry on February 19 after the 9:30 service. We will be starting at 11:00 (there is no 11:15 service that day). Vestry is the day that we gather as a community to make decisions for the coming year, financial as well as overall direction for St. George’s. It is your chance to have a say and vote on important matters for our St. George’s community, and to have an opportunity to review what has happened in the previous year. It is an important day in our Church community.
On February 21st St. George’s will be having it’s annual Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Tuesday, supper. Yummy pancakes and sausage will delight young and old. The cost is $6.00/person, $10.00/2 persons or $20.00/family. Tickets can be purchased at Messy Church or through the church office.
February 23 is Ash Wednesday and marks the beginning of Lent. The Ash Wednesday service is a contemplative service during which the sign of the cross is made on the forehead of each person by the priest. The ashes are obtained from burning the Palm Sunday crosses from the previous year. The Ash Wednesday service is part of our Anglican tradition, a way of marking the beginning of the season of Lent. Lent is a time for reflection and ‘soul searching’. As Christians, it is a time of spiritual preparation for Easter. Lent has been a part of the Christian community’s tradition going back to the very early church.
St. George’s is hoping to begin a toddler/pre-school play group that would run at the same time as Baby Talk (Fridays from 10:30 – 12:30). This group would meet in the hall and would give the young ones a large space to run around and play with other children, while parents can enjoy a coffee with others or play with their children. We are looking for volunteers who would commit to once a month or every 6 weeks. This would include putting on the coffee and being a ‘friendly face’ for those who come. If you would like to be a part of this please call the office (905-877-8044).
Messy Church is on Feb. 8 this month. The theme is Jesus Throws a BBQ. We will be having fish and chips. The doors open at 5:00 and I look forward to seeing you. Last months Messy Church was led by Kyle Jones. It was great to know that Messy Church was in such competent hands. Kyle has offered to lead Messy Church again and I look forward to that.
Spirited Study this month is Wednesday February 15 at the Shepherd’s Crook. The discussion topic is ‘Where is God in human suffering?’ Bring your ideas to share. I look forward to a ‘spirited discussion’ and a Bailey’s in hot chocolate. We meet at 8:00.
This month at Church School there is a Valentine’s party on February 12, no Church School on Feb. 19, Hagar and Hannah on Feb. 26, and on March 4 Herodius, and Jairus’ wife and Job’s wife.
Youth Group meets this month on Feb 12 after the 11:15 service on Sunday.
Just to give you lots of notice, Kid’s Camp (aka Vacation Bible School) will be July 9-13 this year. As the materials come in we will get registration forms out to you.
Hope to see you soon at St. George’s or around Georgetown.
The Rev’d Nancy Rowe
