To Be Known By God

Psalm 139 is one of my personal favorite psalms.

“O LORD, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away. You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, O LORD, you know it completely.”

What really grabs me about this Psalm is that God knows us. I mean really knows us.

There are times that I can feel a bit overwhelmed or anxious about this thought. It could be a bit alarming at a time when our thoughts of privacy, online or in real life, are front and center. But God isn’t Big Brother. Who would you worry about that God would tell?

I, ultimately, feel a great sense of comfort by the knowledge that God really does know me, better than anyone else, better than my friend, better than my parents or brother, better than my spouse, better than I even know myself. Gods gaze is like a bright light that shines into my life that fills every nook and cranny, so completely that every shadow and hiding place is removed. My life is before God in all its fullness.

Everything.

God knows me completely, and still, God loves me. It means that with our strengths and gifts and our warts and weaknesses, God cares for us and wants us to be close.
