3rd Annual Noble Cookie Cup Awarded

St. George's third annual Noble Cookie Cup could not have asked for a finer morning to played for and award our top road hockey team. After having been postponed due to wet weather last month, and rescheduled for Saturday, May 21st, the sunny sky and warm breeze made the parking lot of the church a perfect place for road hockey.

With three teams vying for the grand prize, the action was fast and even occasionally furious. Outstanding goaltending for each team kept the games tight.

After each team had the opportunity to played each other twice it was determined that Team Chocolate Chip and Team Smores would be facing off in the finals. The prize batch of freshly baked oatmeal cookies, prepared graciously by Mrs. J. Noble, awaited the winner.

These two teams had tied both times they had met previously, but in the final match finally found a way to solve the fine goaltending of Team Smores. Team Chocolate Chip celebrated their victory by first hoisting the prize and then opening the container and passing them around to all the participants of our morning of fun.

Congratulations Team Chocolate Chip!

Pentecost Marks A Step In The Right Direction

Pentecost Sunday celebrations around the Diocese of Niagara were to be important opportunities for evangelism and hospitality in every parish. For St. George's, Pentecost marks the first steps along the way to growing on our mission to proclaim the gospel message of Jesus Christ.

Bunches of brightly coloured balloons were among the finishing touches that help underline the festivity, along with cake at our coffee hour. The Parish Choir sang a special anthem at our 9:30 service. Everyone had been encouraged to invite a guest be they family, friend, or neighbour.

Helen Vandermey, our parish Evangelism representative, worked hard to co-ordinate and encourage the hospitality during our celebrations. She continues her work and ministry among the congregation and hopes that our parish evangelism will continue to become stronger. She along with two other members of our congregation are planning on attending the Magnetic Church Conference being offered in the diocese in September.

As Pentecost marks the "birth" of the church, we pray that our celebrations this year will mark the beginning of Spirit led renewal in our parish.

Yard & Bake Sale Fun

Although the damp weather kept us inside the hall, our second parish yard sale went on as announced. Over a dozen families from the parish participated and provided, mainly, used items of all shapes and sizes for sale to raise funds for the St. George's. From furniture to home electronics, from kids toys to potted plants, all kind of interesting item were available for purchase.

Each family that participated provided donated not only their items but each was responsible for providing the salesmanship of their own previously enjoyed items.

New to the sale this year was a bake sale. With the help of many fine bakers in the parish, a wide assortment of cookies, pies, and squares were also on sale in the front foyer.

Paul Skuriat, the organizer of the event, announced how pleased he was with the event this year. He did hope that we might have better weather next year which would allow us to set up on the lawn of the church. It would certainly give us better exposure to the potential customers driving by on Guelph Street. Some of the parish youth were enlisted to take a sign out to the sidewalk and draw the attention of passing traffic to our sales. Paul also thanked all who helped to make the day a successful event.

By the end of the day, over two thousand dollars was raised for the church. Good work!

Inviting others to celebrate Pentecost

This Sunday, May 8th, the members of St. George's will be given specially printed door hangers are designed to help us invite our friends, family, and neighbours to join us on Sunday the 15th, the Day of Pentecost. This is just one part of the how St. George's is responding to the Bishop's Pentecost Challenge.

Pentecost is celebrated as the day when the Holy Spirit came down on Jesus Disciples, empowering them in proclaiming the message of Jesus. It is sometime referred to as the "Birthday" of the Church.

Special music is being provided by the Parish Choir at the 9:30 service and every member is being encouraged to help St. George's be as hospitable to our invited guests.

Here is a copy of the announcement in our Sunday Bulletin this week:

Pentecost Sunday is just one week away! We’re dusting off the pews to accommodate all the folks that we’re bringing to our parish family gathering next Sunday. If you haven’t invited someone yet – please do this week. It’s time for Anglicans to be proud of who we are. We are inclusive, understanding, reconciling and loving people. We are what the world needs – why not share our lives with lots of people? Bring a friend, relative, spouse, child, or someone who has been difficult in your life. It will be a wonderful day for our parish.
